Catherine Fong and her staff at Catherine’s Closet are getting on the bandwagon for our Wear Aloha initiative. She is sending us a series of vintage Island-made pieces with ideas on how to style them for maximum effect. The first (above) is a 1970s McInerny Tropieana Hawaii lotus flower print maxi with a 1950s blood glass necklace from

As you readers know, for the past few months I have been encouraging Islanders to wear at least one thing made by a local designer every time we step out

There was a recent story in the New York Times by Nicholas D. Kristof that really struck a nerve. Writing from Niger, Kristof reported that only 9 percent of babies in Niger receive nothing but breast milk during their first six months of life. In neighboring Burkina Faso, he wrote, “fewer than 7 percent of

I am saddened to report that Island Edge is closing its doors in Ala Moana Center tomorrow. Apparently General Growth Properties offered Pomare, parent company of Island Edge and Hilo Hattie, the opportunity to terminate the store’s lease early and the company decided to go for it. They say they are going to refocus their

We are back home in Hawaii now (although a bit jet lagged) and have been thinking about some of our favorite things in the city. If you’ve been reading my blogs from there (thank you, thank you!) you know that we had a wonderful experience wandering the streets and learned a bit about some neighborhoods.
